Broadcom Sends Cease-and-Desist Letters to VMware Perpetual License Holders
Briefly

Following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware in November 2023, the company has ceased sales of VMware's perpetual licenses and is sending cease-and-desist letters to users with expired support contracts. Users can continue using their software but can't renew support unless under a pre-existing contract. This move, which aims to shift users toward subscription bundles with increased prices, has led some customers to consider alternatives or continue unsupported usage. Despite not receiving updates, some users still received letters demanding compliance with the new policies.
Some users running VMware unsupported have reported receiving cease-and-desist letters from Broadcom informing them that their contract with VMware has expired.
The letter tells users that the implementation of any such updates past the Expiration Date must be immediately removed, adding: 'Any such use of Support past the Expiration Date constitutes a material breach of the Agreement...'
Broadcom ended VMware perpetual license sales, aiming to push VMware users to buy subscriptions to VMware product bundles, with associated costs that have increased by 300 percent.
One customer received a cease-and-desist letter despite not receiving VMware updates since their support contracts expired, highlighting the aggressive enforcement of Broadcom's new policies.
