The upBUS project explores merging autonomous electric buses with ropeway systems, creating a flexible and efficient mobility solution. Led by RWTH Aachen University, it aims to develop a modular platform that integrates road and cable transport. The initiative includes a prototype test set for mid-2025, assessing safety and docking capabilities with an initial operational test in August 2025. Collaborating with local institutions, it will ultimately create a passenger version designed for ten occupants, featuring modern transit amenities and ensuring multi-modal functionality through its intelligent interface.
Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the research initiative is being carried out in collaboration with two additional RWTH institutes and the municipality of Simmerath.
The first operational test will involve, in August 2025, a so-called "primotype," a semi-autonomous 48V electric vehicle equipped with LiDAR, stereo cameras, and a lifting module.
