Tesla cleared in Canada EV rebate investigation
Briefly

Transport Canada has concluded an investigation into Tesla, clearing the company of fraud related to a significant number of EV rebate claims. Tesla submitted 8,653 claims earlier this year for Canada’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program. Authorities confirmed these claims were valid and represented cars sold before the January 12 submission deadline. Initially valued at approximately $43 million, payments were frozen pending investigation. Although the results were accepted, questions arose regarding Tesla’s knowledge of the deadline, implying potential prior communication with officials.
Transport Canada has ruled that there was no evidence of fraud after Tesla submitted 8,653 EV rebate claims for Canada’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program. The claims were determined to legitimately represent cars sold before January 12, which marked the final day for OEMs to submit claims before the program's suspension.
The investigation estimated that the claims submitted by Tesla were valued at around $43 million. Following the investigation launch, rebate payments were frozen until the claims were validated.
Huw Williams from the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association expressed acceptance of the investigation's results but raised questions about Tesla's timing to submit claims just before the program's deadline.
Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland stated the claims were validated and legitimately represented vehicles delivered prior to the submission deadline, dispelling any notions of fraud.
