SWR apologises for Arterio train delays, promises accelerated rollout ahead of Summer
Briefly

South Western Railway (SWR) has apologized for the delays in introducing its new Arterio trains, originally expected in 2019, citing infrastructure issues that prevent drivers from having a clear view of platforms. Currently, the company is implementing a revised training program for both drivers and guards to enable quicker deployment of the trains. The new Arterio fleet is intended to replace multiple older train models, with future plans aiming for driver-only operations. However, until infrastructure improvements are made, such operations remain on hold.
The new Arterio trains have faced a series of delays primarily due to challenges in providing the driver with a clear view of the platforms.
SWR will train both drivers and guards as an interim measure, allowing for a quicker implementation of the Arterio trains into service.
Eventually, the Arterios will replace SWR's Class 455, 456, 458, and 707 trains, marking a significant modernization of the fleet.
Long term goals involve transitioning to driver-only operations, but current infrastructure challenges are delaying this objective.
