Pace Suburban Bus has commenced renovations on its North Division Garage, marking a significant step towards achieving a zero-emission fleet by 2040. This facility will support the agency’s transition by housing and charging up to 60 electric buses. Funded through Rebuild Illinois and federal grants, this initiative emphasizes environmental justice by prioritizing areas impacted by pollution. Pace believes investing in clean energy will benefit essential public transit users and contribute positively to local communities, ultimately requiring around $2.5 billion to fully implement Project Zero.
Today marks another step forward in Pace's commitment to a zero-emission future. We already have a few zero-emission and hybrid buses in service, but this facility will take our sustainability efforts to the next level.
By launching this effort in Waukegan, Pace is prioritizing communities historically impacted by industrial pollution and economic disinvestment, ensuring they benefit from the agency's clean energy transition.
