"President Trump used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to enact sweeping tariffs on nearly all goods imported into the US, including e-bikes. The court ruled that only Congress had the authority to put tariffs in place, stating, "The core Congressional power to impose taxes such as tariffs is vested exclusively in the legislative branch by the Constitution. Tariffs are a core Congressional power.""
"In e-bike-related news this week, we have a slew of new releases to cover, along with an update to the tariff situation. Could this cause e-bike prices to fall? In the UK, Raleigh and Sharp (the electronics brand) are debuting new e-bike models. Raleigh's lightweight commuter offers a premium mid-drive experience without the high cost. Sharp dropped an entire catalogue of new models covering urban modes, folding bikes, cruisers, and even a utility e-bike."
A federal appeals court held that the Trump administration's broad "Liberation Day" reciprocal tariffs were unlawful and permitted the tariffs to remain in place until October 14 while the administration seeks Supreme Court review. The court emphasized that only Congress has authority to impose tariffs and described tariffs as a core Congressional power. E-bikes currently face multiple import levies including Section 301, Fentanyl, reciprocal, and Section 232 tariffs; if the ruling is sustained some of those tariffs could cease to be collected. UK manufacturers Raleigh and Sharp announced new e-bike lineups from lightweight mid-drive commuters to urban, folding, cruiser, and utility models.
