Amazon E-Bikes Take Root in Manhattan and Brooklyn
"After a recent expansion, Amazon has over 300 cargo bikes doing same-day deliveries in Manhattan. This month, the company announced a pilot program for the bikes in Washington D.C., and a spokesman said it was planning pilots in other American cities for this year."
Brandon Quizeno has a driver’s license but delivers parcels using an Amazon cargo bike from a Lower East Side hub. The bikes are dark blue, battery-powered, pedal-assist, and equipped with four wheels and an enclosed rear container that can hold over 100 parcels. Parking challenges make vans difficult to use in narrow New York streets, while cargo bikes are described as easier. The bikes require two trips to match the delivery volume of a van, but they cost significantly less to operate. Amazon has expanded cargo bike use in Manhattan, with over 300 bikes for same-day deliveries, and has started a pilot in Washington, D.C., with additional pilots planned in other U.S. cities.
