A new study from the Benioff Homeless and Housing Initiative reveals that while drug use is prevalent among homeless individuals, most do not use drugs. Approximately 37% of the homeless population reported regular drug use, while 25% have never used drugs. Interestingly, 35% indicated reduced drug use post-homelessness, driven by concerns such as child custody. The study highlights a significant gap in treatment availability, with 1 in 5 individuals actively seeking help but unable to access it, underlining the necessity for improved support services.
"The finding highlighted the need for better treatment options, Kushel said. Many told interviewers that had already cut back and would like help to cut back more."
"One of the most poignant findings was that 1 in 5 told us they are actively seeking treatment and couldn't get it, Kushel said in an interview."
