Key Sugars in Breast Milk Support Toddler Gut and Brain Development After the First Year
"These figures matter because breast milk is more than a source of calories. It maintains the ideal balance of nutrients while delivering a vast array of bioactive compounds that shape your child's growth and development. Among these compounds are human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), complex sugars that rank as the third most abundant solid component in breast milk, surpassed only by lactose and lipids."
"A recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Pediatrics explored how these core sugars influence gut and brain health beyond the first year of life. Their work highlights the significance of breastfeeding and why its benefits continue long after infancy, reinforcing the lasting foundation it helps create for your child's resilience and well-being. Study Shows Key HMOs Remain Abundant Beyond 12 Months"
Breastfeeding initiation in the United States is about 83%, but continuation falls to just over half at six months and about one-third by one year. Breast milk supplies nutrients and numerous bioactive compounds, including human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are the third most abundant solids after lactose and lipids. Measurements of HMOs at or beyond 12 months included 13 qualifying studies and 4,786 milk samples from multiple countries. Concentrations were standardized into grams per liter (g/L), with totals calculated by summing measured sugars when needed. Harmonization permitted comparison across analytical methods and revealed key HMOs remain at meaningful concentrations later in lactation.
