A review by the Foundation for the Restoration of America revealed that nearly 11% of women who underwent chemical abortions experienced serious health complications, such as infection and hemorrhage. This percentage, which rose to 11.2% in the final year of the review, indicates that these risks are grossly underestimated compared to clinical trial data that suggested less than 0.5% complication rates. The report highlighted that the real-world risks of mifepristone, approved for terminating early pregnancies, were 22 times greater than previously communicated by the FDA.
Our data shows that chemical abortion poses greater risks to women in real-world clinical use than revealed in the clinical trials of mifepristone and that the rate of serious adverse events from the chemical abortion regimen continues to grow in recent years.
In the final year of the review, that proportion jumped to 11.2% of chemical abortions having a serious adverse event - affecting tens of thousands of women.
