Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno is a 10-acre, hand-carved subterranean complex created by Baldassare Forestiere, an immigrant who faced challenges growing citrus in the Central Valley. Instead of giving up, he excavated underground in 1906, creating rooms and corridors that allowed him to cultivate citrus trees and other fruits. Visitors are often surprised by the size and beauty of the gardens, which represent Forestiere's perseverance and creativity in overcoming obstacles while pursuing his dream of farming.
"The most inspirational part of the underground gardens is the story of a man who came to America with a dream. He hit obstacle after obstacle, and he found a way to persevere and to work around those obstacles and make something really wonderful."
"The majority of our visitors are just astounded by what they see."
