The Agronomists, Ep 228: Revving up triticale stands with Joanna Follings and Christine O'Reilly
"On this episode of The Agronomists, host Lyndsey Smith is joined by Joanna Follings, cereal specialist, and Christine O'Reilly, grazing and forage specialist, both of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness to talk about revving up forage stands, particularly winter triticale, for use as feed, a cash crop, cover crop, and even a grazing source."
"The Agronomists is brought to you by RealAg Radio, Ruminating with RealAg, and the Canola School"
Winter triticale stands can be intensified to produce livestock feed, generate cash income, provide cover crop benefits, and support grazing systems. Improving establishment and stand vigor increases yield and multifunctionality. Appropriate variety selection, seeding timing and rates, fertility management, and coordinated grazing or harvest timing help balance forage production with soil protection. Multifunctional forage stands can diversify farm revenue streams, supply on-farm feed, and contribute to soil conservation. Integrating forage management with market and grazing plans maximizes economic and agronomic returns while maintaining stand health and productivity.
