""We heard from farmers and ranchers that further expanding the eligible area was necessary. This change better reflects regions with the highest Richardson's ground squirrel populations and ensures producers have access to the right tools to manage this pest.""
""The revised Emergency Use Registration includes measures to protect species at risk, including increased monitoring and carcass collection and disposal requirements, as well as enhanced mandatory training.""
Saskatchewan has expanded the Emergency Use Registration for two percent liquid strychnine to more rural municipalities to manage Richardson's ground squirrels until November 2027. The initial area included seven crop districts, but producer groups advocated for a broader range. The expansion now includes 208 RMs in 15 crop districts. The revised registration includes measures to protect species at risk and a Strychnine Stewardship Program will be developed in partnership with the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities. Strychnine is expected to be available for late-summer application in 2026.
