N misses, aphid thresholds, strip-till timing, and strip rust | Wheat Pete's Word, May 27, 2026
Nitrogen application problems continue to appear from spreader and sprayer issues across Ontario. Late nitrogen rescue applications can still recover considerable wheat yield before anthesis. Drone-applied nitrogen early in the season can create noticeably larger flag leaves and thicker wheat canopies. Stripe rust has been confirmed in Oxford, Huron, and Wellington counties, and symptoms can be distinguished from viral yellowing. Wheat aphid thresholds are reviewed, with warnings against unnecessary insecticide tank-mixing. Cereal leaf beetle pressure appears elevated, and scouting is encouraged in high-risk areas. Plugged phosphorus bands on heavy clay soils can create dramatic differences in wheat height and maturity. Warm, dry weather is improving conditions, and staying connected within the farming community can help manage stress during difficult planting.
"Plugged phosphorus bands created dramatic wheat height and maturity differences on heavy clay soils. See the photo on height difference.
