Courtland, California, is recognized for its pear production and hosts the Pear Fair, the largest agricultural fair in Northern California. This event celebrates the ripe Bartlett pears and includes various activities like parades and a youth pageant. Despite its agricultural significance, Courtland faces challenges from potential changes that could affect the community's structure and access. The pear industry in Northern California promotes camaraderie, with Kelseyville sharing the title of pear capital and hosting its own festival, showcasing friendly competition rather than rivalry.
"Not many people know that Courtland is a very big pear place," Katelyn Ortega, a rising senior at the local Delta High School, told SFGATE while tending to goats at Arceo Ranch, her family's farm in Courtland.
Courtland has an apparent advantage: It's home to the Pear Fair, the largest, continuously running agricultural fair of its kind in Northern California.
Kelseyville in Lake County similarly declares itself a pear capital and also hosts a pear festival. Not that anyone in the NorCal pear industry seems territorial on titles.
"Why can't we have two Bartlett pear capitals of the world?" Chris Zanobini, executive director of the California Pear Advisory Board, added over email. "It is the perfect pear!"
