The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has promised a thorough investigation into a major scheme of fraudulent EU agricultural subsidy claims that caused a significant financial loss to the state. The scandal, which involved fake applications from non-existent farmers, has been linked to a total of €290 million in claims. This revelation highlighted severe inadequacies in the state’s efforts to combat corruption, leading to the resignation of top officials, including the migration minister. A new taskforce will be created to address these issues and ensure rigorous scrutiny of the past handling of agricultural funds.
The scheme, which allegedly saw hundreds of applications being made by non-existent owners of pasture and grazing land over a five-year period beginning in 2017, was brought to light by the European public prosecutor's office (EPPO).
