Fourth outbreak of highly contagious bird flu confirmed on large turkey farm in Laois
"Unfortunately another outbreak of avian influenza has occurred, this time in a turkey flock in Co. Laois, detected on November 21. This is a dynamic and evolving situation, particularly during the high-risk period for avian influenza and my department has moved swiftly to implement disease control measures in line with national and EU legislation. Restriction zones have been established around the affected turkey premises, with strict movement controls on the movements of poultry and poultry products. Veterinary investigations and surveillance are ongoing."
"Restriction zones have been established around the affected holding, comprising of a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone in line with national and EU legislation. The development follows the Department of Agriculture's implementation of a mandatory housing order for all poultry and captive birds, which took effect on Monday, November 10. These regulations also include a ban on gatherings of birds from different premises to protect the birds from the risk of infection."
An avian influenza outbreak was identified on November 21 in a turkey flock of around 30,000 birds at a farm near Ballybrittas, Co. Laois. This represents the fourth commercial poultry outbreak in the Republic of Ireland. Authorities established a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone with strict movement controls on poultry and poultry products. Veterinary investigations and surveillance are ongoing. A mandatory housing order for all poultry and captive birds took effect on November 10, and regulations ban gatherings of birds from different premises. Flock owners are thanked for complying with biosecurity and housing measures to protect the poultry sector.
