Empire State of apples
""The trees the we're using in these very high-density plantings are dwarfing,""
""they stay a lot smaller than the apple trees you might be used to seeing and they put more of their roots' energy into growing sweet delicious apples than they do growing trees.""
The New York Apple Association includes more than 500 family-owned, multigenerational apple orchards producing hundreds of varieties. Orchards employ specially selected dwarfing trees in very high-density plantings, which remain much smaller than traditional trees and concentrate root energy on fruit development rather than tree growth. These tree selections improve efficiency and fruit quality, contributing to sweeter, more flavorful apples. New York apples reach consumers through widespread distribution, appearing in over 7,400 grocery retailers nationwide. The combination of family farming practices, modern planting techniques, and diverse varieties supports a robust statewide apple industry.
