Corn School: What to do with all that residue?
"In 1985 we had about 5,000 pounds per acre of residue... and in 2025 we have over 10,000 pounds per acre,"
"The higher plant populations, especially since 1985, have increased along with the yield,"
"microbial respiration is highe"
Average corn residue per acre increased from about 5,000 pounds in 1985 to over 10,000 pounds in 2025. Higher grain yields directly increase residue because stover typically represents roughly half of plant biomass. Yield gains result from improved genetics, crop management, and higher plant populations. Earlier planting enabled by better cold-tolerant seed and a warming climate extends the growing season and raises yield potential. Diversified rotations and improved soil biology, such as corn-soybean-wheat with red clover, build microbial biomass and accelerate residue breakdown, aiding management of greater residue volumes.
