The Brook Mine in Wyoming will be the first new coal mine in decades, aiming to extract vital rare earth elements for technology and military needs. Key figures, including the Energy Secretary and state officials, will attend the groundbreaking. The mine's coal is reported to contain significant quantities of neodymium, dysprosium, and other rare earth elements. Currently, the U.S. relies heavily on China for these materials. Plans are to process the coal in Wyoming and supply it to domestic customers, including the government, amidst declining coal industry metrics.
"We would intend to mine it here in Wyoming, process it here in Wyoming and sell it to domestic customers including the government," Ramaco CEO Randall Atkins said Thursday.
Analysis by U.S. national laboratories show the Brook Mine coal contains valuable quantities of rare earths like neodymium and dysprosium, as well as critical minerals gallium and germanium.
