Stage 2 of the Sibiu Tour in Rumania featured a wild brown bear that briefly watched the race before departing. The bear appeared in a remote area along the 203-kilometre mountainous route from Sibiu to Balea Lac. Rumania is home to a large population of Eurasian brown bears, adding to the area's wildlife presence. Incidents of wildlife encounters in cycling events are not uncommon and can lead to crashes. Despite the bear's curiosity, it did not stay to see the outcome of the stage won by Matthew Riccitello, who took the overall lead in the race.
A large wild brown bear briefly watched the race convoy go past before jumping over a roadside barrier and making a swift exit.
Rumania has one of the largest populations of Eurasian brown bears in central Europe, providing a unique wildlife backdrop for events like the Sibiu Tour.
This is not the first incident of wild animals interacting with bike races, with previous occurrences resulting in crashes and injuries to riders.
American climber Matthew Riccitello won stage 2 of the Sibiu Tour, moving into the overall lead of the four-day event.
