""I made a connection with some Black farmers out in Florida in December, and I drove there to pick up the watermelons," he said. "Just so people can continue their fruit fasts and stuff like that. People were telling me 'I'm 10 days deep into a fruit fast and you're saving my life right now.'""
""I always had a dream of just bringing healthier food options to the community," she said. "I started Kathy's Kitchen to realize that dream, and I did all I I could do.""
Dozens of watermelons were displayed outside a strip mall on West 77th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard as Imani Diggs returned from a 43-hour round trip to Florida. Diggs made four such trips in a month, sourcing seeded watermelons from farms in Florida, Mexico and Houston and delivering produce across California and to Las Vegas. Diggs opened a storefront called Imani Gardens inside the Crenshaw Food Hub to sell watermelons, juice and produce. The food hub occupied the former Kathy's Kitchen space after Kathy Alston closed her five-year juice shop built to bring healthier food options to the community.
