Milan were close to completing a deal for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during the winter transfer window. The move was stopped when Mateta did not pass his medical because of concerns about the condition of his knee. The situation has created internal division within the club, but Milan still need a new striker as the season ends. Other striker options are difficult to secure, so Mateta is viewed as a potential opportunity since he is expected to leave Palace. Journalist Nicolo Schira reported that Milan have not ended their interest and could rekindle the pursuit during the summer transfer window, with Mateta seemingly ready to depart after the World Cup.
"Links with Mateta are nothing new. In fact, towards the end of the window, the Rossoneri were very close to getting a deal for him over the line. However, in the end the Frenchman did not pass his medical because of concerns over the condition of his knee, forcing Milan to pull the plug."
"That particular operation has become the subject of an internal divide within the club it seems. Yet, as the end of the season rolls around, the Diavolo are still in need of a new striker. Given the difficulty getting other names, they might well go for a an 'opportunity' like Mateta, who will leave Palace."
""Milan are still interested in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was one step away to sign for Milan during the winter transfer window. The French player seems ready to leave CPFC after the World Cup and Rossoneri are at the window," he said."
