The striker trained at Milanello since Boxing Day following clearance from West Ham and was included in the squad for the match against Cagliari, making a substitute cameo and improving after a rusty start. Füllkrug was born in Hanover on 9 February 1993 and developed at local clubs including TuS Ricklingen and Sportfreunde Ricklingen before joining Werder Bremen's academy at 14. He progressed to senior football with Werder Bremen II, spent a loan at Greuther Fürth where he scored a rapid hat-trick in November 2013, then suffered a ligament rupture and later moved to Nürnberg, with Werder retaining a buy-back clause. He scored 18 goals in 59 appearances across two competitions before returning to his hometown.
