Michael Matthews returns to Milan-San Remo, driven by his narrow defeat last year. With three podium finishes over 11 years yet still without a win, this season’s preparation has been intensified, as he has extensively reconnoitered the route. Matthews recalled how a lapse in concentration during last year's sprint, caused by a sunglasses mishap, cost him victory. As he heads into this 289km race with a supportive team, he is eager to achieve his goal, putting previous disappointments behind him.
After last year, losing by a tyre width or something, it gave me extra motivation to put a bit more time into the recon. I made sure I know every piece of the road.
Sprinting to the line, I really thought I was going to win. I think it was at 25 metres to go, I was still in front, and when my glasses fell, I had that lapse of concentration for a second.
