Inter chief warns Italy over San Siro deadline
"It is clear that the objective is to be ready well before the start of Euro 2032 to ensure that this new stadium can be used during the European Championship,"
"We hope that all this can happen because we are faced with a typically very slow Italian bureaucracy. I hope that it can be completed by 2030."
"In the last 15 years, 50 stadiums have been built in Europe with an investment of around €20 billion, in that time only three stadiums have been modernized in Italy, so we are way behind,"
"That means that the Italian system isn't capable of supporting elite sport."
Inter Milan and AC Milan completed purchase of the 99-year-old San Siro stadium and surrounding area, clearing financing to demolish and jointly build a new 71,500-seat arena. The clubs aim to have the new venue ready well before Euro 2032 and target completion by 2030. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta warned that typically slow Italian bureaucracy could jeopardize the timeline and noted that only three Italian stadiums have been modernized in the past 15 years compared with 50 new stadiums across Europe. Foster + Partners and Manica were appointed to design the project, which covers more than three million square feet and cost about €197 million.
