The Flying Scotsman service is one of the most powerful names through a century of British railway travel. It is synonymous with speed, punctuality, regularity and quality.

As a child, Ed Alcock listened to the story of his great uncle Kendon's death at the age of 17. It happened at the bottom of the mine, his mother, Sheila, told him one day. He had been working there since he left school. A section of the gallery sank and a heavy crane fell on him, crushing him and causing head injuries. A steam train featuring in the upcoming Harry Potter television series is scheduled to visit the Epping Ongar Railway this spring, including the Easter weekend. The nearly 80-year old steam locomotive 6989 'Wightwick Hall' will star as the Hogwarts Express in the TV series. Repainted into red livery for its television role, the locomotive is expected to operate steam-hauled services along the Epping Ongar Railway throughout April.
