One of the things that Tiyo Shibabaw is looking forward to the most about moving her Oakland-based Burmese restaurant, Teni East Kitchen, to a new location in March is space for a steamer. It's a bigger kitchen, she says. The kitchen we currently have is very small, I would love to offer steamed vegetables and seafood. In fact, whole steamed fish is likely to be one of the new additions to the menu at Teni East Kitchen.
As the Nosh columnist for openings and closings, it's my job to report on a lot of sad restaurant news. I inform folks when their beloved local bakery shuts down, when pizzerias close wordlessly, and when their go-to date night restaurants suddenly ghost them. And, while it's not always easy being the bearer of bad news, this particular story feels like a knife to my own ribs. This is a closure I hoped I'd never, ever have to write about.

Oakland and San Francisco are connected by a small body of water and a bridge. But that's about all the two Bay Area cities have in common, and longtime residents will tell you Oakland pride runs deep. And on top of giving the world Zendaya and the word hyphy, Oakland is also an incredible place to eat. The largest city in the East Bay is also one of the most diverse in the country-and that's reflected in the diversity of its restaurants.
