The Warrior Dividend that President Donald Trump announced during his televised address to the nation Wednesday is not made possible by tariff revenues, as the president suggested. Instead, the $1,776 payments to troops are coming from a congressionally approved housing supplement money they were already set to receive that was a part of bill of tax cut extensions and expansions signed into law in July.

Trump said 1.45 million military service members would get the warrior dividend before Christmas. The checks are already on the way, he said. Yet his bonus payments for the troops come as millions of Americans are fretting about the costs of groceries, housing, utilities and their holiday gifts as inflation remains elevated and the labor market has meaningfully weakened in recent months.

"The web page also contained a "running list of German support organizations for your kit bags" that included charities like Foodsharing e.V. and Essen fur Alle (Food for All), as well as the app Too Good To Go. At the top of the list was Tafel Deutschland, which it described as "the umbrella organization distributes food to people in poverty through its more than 970 local food banks."

According to the Trump administration, funding will run out for the food assistance program that is relied upon by 42 million Americans to supplement their grocery bills. The administration has rejected using more than $5 billion in contingency funds to keep the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program flowing into November. SNAP helps about 1 in 8 Americans buy groceries using debit cards normally loaded each month by the federal government.
