Tucked into northwest Arkansas ' Ozark Mountains, Eureka Springs is a place where contradictions don't just coexist, they define the destination. It's a Victorian-era spa town and a paranormal hotspot, a biker mecca and a proudly LGBTQ+ enclave nicknamed "the gayest small town in America." In the Ozarks, "the place where misfits fit," Eureka Springs wears that identity especially well, drawing artists, nature lovers, and free spirits of all kinds for over a century.
Included among its holdings was an estimated $87m in real estate in the city centre. After a fire sale this spring, all nine buildings sold; most will become residential and commercial spaces unrelated to the arts. But a development firm called Scout is transforming two of these buildings, Hamilton and Furness halls, into a new Village of Industry and Art (Via), with the goal of serving Philadelphia's creative community through a mix of offices, studios and affordable housing.
When the California Shakespeare Theater faced financial troubles, it marked the beginning of the end for the company. Aurora Theatre Company is now in a similar predicament.
