When she was 16, Marjolein Robertson had a period that didn't stop. Changing pads every half-hour, she thought it would end eventually. Hospitalized on the night before an exam, doctors said if taken home, she wouldn't live through the night.
Robertson's mother's insistence to take her to the hospital saved her life. Misunderstood initially as a severe period, doctors later found her condition life-threatening. She had three days of hospital care and two blood transfusions.
