Protecting them is impossible': raising children in a contaminated town in pictures
Briefly

Sorgini's project involves portraits of the mothers and children of the Tamburi neighbourhood the same mothers who struggle and demonstrate every day to protect the health of their children. The ties and invisible lines that keep people in Tamburi are strong.
The lower socio-economic situation for a lot of Tamburi's residents makes it impossible to consider the idea of moving to a safer area. The background a large mound of growing weeds was built to hide the sight of the factory behind it an example of the feeble measures taken by the Italian government to protect the residents of Tamburi.
As we speak I watch her son play like any child, but here it is in the contaminated soil, his hands covered. My heart breaks as Maddalena speaks of her awareness of this danger. The balance between allowing a child a normal childhood and protecting them from harm is impossible to achieve here.
Rosa's mother kisses the face of her grandson and holds him close. She has lived in Tamburi her whole life and has seen many lives lost to illness. The symbolism of Mother Mary is prominent in Tamburi, often cloaked in modesty, she's seen as a symbol of hope, love and sacrifice.
