My dad sacrificed everything to retire early - only to die before he could enjoy it. I'll never recommend early retirement to anyone.
Briefly

My father was always a thrifty guy, and he tried - mostly unsuccessfully - to pass that trait along to me and my siblings. My dad lived a frugal lifestyle, working hard and saving money, which he insisted was the only pathway to real happiness. He instilled in us the importance of saving and being resourceful. Yet, despite this mindset, he lived in what I now see as a 'monastic frugality prison' when he retired early.
A typical Saturday would include lunch at Sam's Club, where he encouraged us to eat all the free samples. My father had a unique way to combine fun with frugality, making every outing an adventure. We would take stale bread to feed the ducks, enjoying simple pleasures, riding elevators in tall buildings, and loading up on inexpensive treats before a 99-cent movie. His ability to find joy in frugality has had a lasting impact on me.
