Tess Taylor, appointed El Cerrito’s poet laureate for 2024-25, aims to enhance poetry education in urban public schools and celebrate community pluralism.
Taylor plans to mentor El Cerrito High School students, connect them with local writers, and organize events that celebrate contributions to their new literary magazine.
With support from the Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship, Taylor will establish partnerships with the El Cerrito Library and initiate a youth poetry festival.
The Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship honors poets in civic positions, providing them $50,000 to create impactful projects that enrich community lives through poetry.
