Washington describes protests in Bolivia as an attempted coup d'etat'
Bolivia has faced anti-government protests that began with strikes earlier in the month and expanded into a nationwide movement, especially in La Paz. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Landau said the unrest represents an attempt at a coup d’état. He reported speaking by phone with President Rodrigo Paz and expressed concern that violent demonstrators are blockading streets despite Paz being elected overwhelmingly less than a year earlier. Landau called for other countries in the Americas to condemn the events and warned that the situation could undermine a promising political opening. He also praised Argentina’s support for Bolivia and noted Argentina’s backing of democratically elected authorities.
"Make no mistake about it. This is a coup that's being financed by this unholy alliance between politics and organized crime throughout the region. The senior diplomat called on other countries on the continent to condemn the events in Bolivia. I would hate to see, you know, this very promising opening go down the drain. It's bad for all the countries in the Americas to see this kind of incivility, declared the deputy secretary of state, after praising the support Argentina has expressed for its neighboring country."
