We're writing history': Spanish women tackle Wikipedia's gender gap
Briefly

Just under a fifth of Wikipedia's content focuses on women, with only about 15% of the volunteer editors being women. Groups like Spain's Wikiesfera, US's Whose Knowledge?, Italy's WikiDonne, and Switzerland's Les Sans Pages are aiming to address this gender imbalance.
The Wikimedia Foundation acknowledges that Wikipedia, powered by humans, is susceptible to human biases and reflects structural and historical inequalities faced by women globally. Efforts like Horrillo's Wikiesfera are supported to correct this long-recognized imbalance.
The foundation notes that historical narratives on Wikipedia are often shaped by more male editors who rely on existing sources, leaving out women's perspectives and knowledge. Support from organizations like the Wikimedia Foundation is helping to change this narrative.
Through initiatives like Wikiesfera, women are gaining visibility on platforms like Wikipedia, challenging the traditional power structures that have historically dictated historical narratives. The shift is empowering civil society to reshape the way history is told and acknowledged.
