Sandy Yawn has established herself as a trailblazer in the male-dominated yachting industry, having worked for over three decades. She began her career without any female role models and had to prove herself through hard work and determination. Yawn highlights the lack of women in leadership roles on yachts and aspires to create opportunities for younger women. Her journey was influenced by her personal recovery, and her first mentor was a male captain who helped her gain necessary skills and training.
When I started my yachting career more than 30 years ago, I'd never seen a woman captain. Women worked on ships, but they were few and far between in the world of yachts, and I'd never seen one at the helm.
I want to create opportunities for other women to get into this industry. For a long time, I didn't have any female role models.
As a woman, you absolutely have to work harder.
I wanted to change my life, and I did whatever it took to succeed. I started out as a deck crew member and worked my way up.
