Judge Kathleen Ryan voluntarily resigned from her Oakland County bench after recordings surfaced with racist and homophobic statements. In a September 2024 recording she said she isn't "systemically racist" but a "new racist" and used derogatory language about Black people. The recordings were sent to public officials, including Oakland County executive Dave Coulter, and some slurs were directed at him. Ryan had been on paid administrative leave for 15 months. Court administrator Edward Hutton provided the recordings, saying years of harassment left him believing she could not make fair rulings. County leaders condemned the language as demeaning to the judiciary and harmful to public trust.
