Trump commutes sentence of former Rep. George Santos, who was serving 7 years for fraud and identity theft | Fortune
"I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY."
"George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison."
"very, very happy with the decision,"
"The defense team applauds President Trump for doing the right thing. The sentence was far too long."
President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of former U.S. Rep. George Santos, ordering his immediate release from federal prison. Santos pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft, admitting to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of 11 people, including family members, and was sentenced in April to more than seven years. He reported to Federal Correctional Institution Fairton on July 25 and was housed in a minimum security camp. Santos had written letters to a Long Island newspaper pleading for mercy and citing loyalty to Trump's agenda. Santos' lawyer praised the commutation, while release timing remained unclear.
