Senate to vote on war powers resolution to prevent Trump from continuing Iran conflict
"We shouldn't be at war without a debate and vote. That was what the framers intended. We protect our troops when we do it the right way. We put them at risk when we do it the wrong way."
"The president has the authority that he needs to conduct the activities, the operations that are currently under way there. I think the president is acting in the best interest of the nation and our national security interests by ensuring that he's protecting Americans and American bases and installations in that region, as well as those of our allies."
Democratic senators Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff, and Chuck Schumer introduced a war powers resolution to halt US military participation in the current conflict with Iran and require presidential authorization from Congress before resuming hostilities. Senate Majority Leader John Thune argues Trump possesses proper authorization and is acting in the nation's best interest by protecting Americans and allies in the region. The resolution needs 50 votes to advance, but Democrats control only 47 seats, with Senator John Fetterman opposing it. Republicans are unlikely to provide the five votes needed for passage, as Thune indicated Trump already has sufficient authority for ongoing military operations.
