Philanthropy in the Crosshairs
"Since late January, leaders at liberal foundations and donor networks have been preparing for a legal assault by federal agencies. That moment finally arrived in September, when, in the wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche directed federal prosecutors to investigate the Open Society Foundations on a range of possible criminal charges, reportedly on orders from the White House."
"Two weeks earlier, Donald Trump had vowed to go after George Soros, the founder of OSF: "We're going to look into Soros, because I think it's a RICO case against him and other people," Trump said on September 12, referring to the federal racketeering law. "Because this is more than, like, protests. This is real agitation." No president has ever before singled out a private foundation or a major philanthropist for an investigation into whatever charges might stick,"
Leaders at liberal foundations and donor networks prepared for a legal assault by federal agencies beginning in late January. In September, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche directed federal prosecutors to investigate the Open Society Foundations on a range of possible criminal charges after Charlie Kirk's assassination, reportedly on White House orders. President Trump earlier vowed to investigate George Soros and suggested a RICO case, describing protests as "real agitation." The administration issued a memorandum to "disband and uproot" groups alleged to support domestic terrorism, and Vice President JD Vance named OSF and the Ford Foundation as targets. OSF called the accusations politically motivated attacks aimed at silencing speech and undermining First Amendment rights.
