'Let's just do it': Governor Hochul calls for Rainbow Flag's restoration in visit to Stonewall National Monument
"There's a lot of people who are hurt by this move. And we're better than that. This country and this state are better than that. I think it's time we start recognizing that we should stand up for those who may not have a voice, but are deeply hurt by what is happening."
"There's a way to do it. The American Flag and the Pride Flag. It's not controversial. Let's just do it."
"Only the US flag and other congressionally or departmentally authorized flags are flown on NPS-managed flagpoles, with limited exceptions."
Governor Kathy Hochul visited Stonewall National Monument on Feb. 11, standing near the flagpole that now flies only the American flag. Hochul said there is space for both the American flag and the Pride Flag and called the flag removal hurtful to many people. She appealed to the president to restore the flag and urged support for those who feel marginalized. Hochul noted the Pride Flag’s significance to New Yorkers and visitors. The National Park Service cited government-wide guidance limiting flags on NPS-managed flagpoles to the US flag and authorized flags.
