Ex-McConnell Chief Rebukes Right-Wingers Mocking Him Over Fall: You Better Pray the Next Gen Has' a Mitch McConnell
"Time didn't start yesterday. Conservative principles didn't just start being challenged in the last 8 years. The threat has been omnipresent. It may not have seemed as dire to some because that man was standing his post when the rest of us were not. You know why the First Amendment became a litmus test in Republican politics and in the judiciary? It was owned by the Left until McConnell started grilling every candidate, newly elected official, or prospective judge about it."
"I watched it. He was relentless. Before he started, at least half the GOP at any given time was willing to short sell Speech if they disagreed with it. They'd give the left campaign finance reform because it was bad politics without considering the ramifications. You have absolutely no idea how bad things could've been during the Obama years without Mitch McConnell. Climate, immigration, taxes, our entire economy, foreign policy, it could've been unrecognizable. They tried it all."
"There's a reason Obama hates him the most. The Left invested much of their attention in the early 2000s to hijacking the federal judiciary. McConnell was adamant about not letting that happen. He crafted plans to ensure that if given the opportunity he would make their worst nightmares come true. I was there. I experienced it first hand. The decision not to seat Merrick Garland was the ballsiest thing I've ever seen a Republican do in my life."
Conservative principles faced ongoing threats well before the last few years. McConnell maintained his position when many Republicans did not, helping to make the First Amendment a Republican litmus test in politics and the judiciary. He rigorously questioned candidates, officials, and judges on free speech and resisted compromises that would curtail speech. Significant portions of the GOP had previously been willing to concede ground on speech and back left-leaning campaign finance reforms without weighing long-term consequences. McConnell actively blocked left efforts to remold the federal judiciary, devised strategies to counteract that influence, and took unprecedented actions such as refusing to seat Merrick Garland.
