Mr. Grimm had served more time behind bars than any other client exonerated with the help of the Innocence Project, dismantling the state's original case against him with new evidence, including DNA testing and research into false confessions.
Much of the key evidence linking Mr. Grimm to the crime was the work of Mary Jane Burton, a senior analyst at Virginia's crime lab whose work is now under review after allegations of shortcuts and possible falsified results surfaced.
