The overall U.S. trade deficit narrowed slightly to just over $901 billion in 2025, down from $904 billion in 2024, marking the third-highest on record. Exports rose 6% and imports nearly 5%. The goods deficit reached a record $1.24 trillion as U.S. companies increased imports of computer chips and other tech goods from Taiwan to support artificial intelligence investments. The goods deficit with China fell about 32% to $202 billion, while gaps with Taiwan and Vietnam expanded sharply. Goods imports from Mexico outpaced exports by about $197 billion, and the services surplus grew to $339 billion.
