"The first known use of the word "boomtown" may have occurred in the late 1800s, per Merriam-Webster, but the concept is alive and well as we head into 2026. The dictionary defines it as a "town enjoying a business and population boom." Or, as GOBankingRates.com put it when determining the biggest boomtown in every state, it's a destination "experiencing positive economic activity and population growth.""
"The company used data from the 2015 and 2023 U.S. Census American Community Surveys to analyze American cities with populations between 25,000 and 500,000. Once it had narrowed down the communities, the team calculated changes in the population and per capita income over eight years. And the company named Fulshear, Texas, a historic city west of Houston, as the country's biggest boomtown. From 2015 to 2023, Fulshear grew in population by an eye-popping 736 percent."
"Still, it's clear people are moving to Fulshear in large numbers. It could be the public education system. Niche.com awarded Fulshear's schools an A+, the same grade it gave to the city's job market and family-friendly qualities. Fulshear also has a low crime rate and many new developments and residential communities (like Cross Creek Ranch). Not to mention, it's just about 35 miles from Houston, so big-city amenities are within driving distance."
GOBankingRates analyzed 2015 and 2023 U.S. Census American Community Survey data for cities with populations between 25,000 and 500,000, measuring population and per capita income change over eight years. Fulshear, Texas recorded the largest population increase, rising 736 percent from 2015 to 2023, with a 2024 estimate of 54,629 residents. Per capita income in Fulshear increased only 6.1 percent, far below other boomtowns such as Jersey City, which saw a 72.8 percent rise. Factors attracting residents include A+ public schools, a strong job market, family-friendly qualities, low crime, new residential developments, and proximity to Houston. Average home value in Fulshear reached $527,109 by December 2025.
