The South Fork Fire was spreading just northwest of the alpine resort town in southern New Mexico, threatening multiple structures and forcing 7,700 people to evacuate.
In 2021, Ruidoso was ranked first within the state and second in the nation for significant risk of catastrophic fire, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
