Hurricane John tracker: Map and projected storm path
Briefly

Hurricane John, the 10th named storm of the Eastern North Pacific hurricane season, is expected to bring hurricane-strength winds and rain to southern Mexico, with predictions of escalating to a major Category 4 hurricane.
Meteorologists monitor a cyclone's wind speed closely. A tropical storm is designated when winds reach 39 mph for one minute; it becomes a Category 1 hurricane at 74 mph.
Hurricanes like John pose serious risks: storm surge is the leading cause of death during hurricanes in the U.S., and flooding from rainfall can persist for days.
Heavy rainfall can produce more than six inches of water, overwhelming drainage and causing flash floods that may continue after the storm has passed.
