Former President Donald Trump accused prosecutors of desperation to jail Bannon, claiming Republicans are targeted by a politically motivated justice system. The judge who ordered Bannon to prison was nominated by Trump.
Bannon's conviction for contempt of Congress includes refusal to cooperate in the Jan. 6 Committee investigation and handing over documents on Trump's election loss efforts.
Nichols initially allowed Bannon to remain free, citing substantial legal questions, but changed after an appeals court panel rejected Bannon's challenges, leading to the prison sentence being enforced.
