FCC adopts an alert system for missing Indigenous people
Briefly

The Federal Communications Commission is launching a new nationwide alert code for missing and endangered Indigenous people, addressing the urgent need for timely alerts when individuals go missing.
Lavina Willie-Nez emphasized that when each Indigenous person goes missing, "we lose a part of our heritage and culture," highlighting the importance of the new alert code for Indigenous communities.
FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks stated the new "MEP" code "closes a critical gap in the nation's public safety infrastructure," demonstrating its significance in enhancing public safety alerts.
The MEP alert code is aimed at helping law enforcement better manage cases of individuals who don’t fit the criteria for Amber or Silver Alerts, filling an important need.
